Hades zagreus3/18/2023 ![]() Unlike his siblings Zagreus is often shown to be humble, good-humored, and often sarcastic and self-deprecating. Having spent most of his immortal life bearing the brunt of his father Hades' repressed frustration and rage, he grew up feeling distant and out of place from the other denizens of the underworld, partially due to his failing to meet the heavy expectations of his father, and partially his apparent inability to contribute to the running of the Underworld. His feet are perpetually on fire.ĭue to his sheltered upbringing, Zagreus is often shown to be ignorant of the world outside of the Underworld, relying on others to relay information about the outside world. His skin is quite pale, and he is physically strong and muscular. His hair is jet black like his father's though with his mother's spikier texture. He has heterochromia with one of his father's red eyes and one of his mother's green. ![]() He is presumably of reasonable height for a mortal as he tells the Minotaur he is the same height as Theseus. Zagreus is somewhat small for a god, considerably smaller than Hades and a head shorter than Persephone. They are both joined by Thor and Artemis and the four establish something of a rowdy alliance. He also found himself aiding a young god by the name of Jöris who is revealed to be the son of Arawn, thus the Prince of Annwn, with the Celtic god seeking his son to harness his unique divine power. At some point in time, Zagreus would become the older brother of Makaria and Melinoë, his two sisters and the Princesses of the Underworld. Persephone resumes her duties as Queen of the Underworld and Hades, now with a renewed respect for his son, allows Zagreus to continue his escape attempts under the guise of finding security vulnerabilities in the Underworld. Zagreus eventually convinces her to return by reminding her of the bonds of family, and they finally sail down from Greece towards the House of Hades on the River Styx ferried by Charon. Despite this, he promises to keep escaping to spend time with Persephone and learn the truth of her absence. After a tearful reunion, Zagreus discovers that since he is bound to the Underworld like his father, he cannot survive long on the surface. After finally defeating Hades for the first time, Zagreus finds Persephone in Greece, in a cottage protected by Nyx's power. Nyx, on the other hand, decides to help Zagreus find the truth about his real mother for himself by putting him in contact with his relatives on Olympus. Hades refuses to even allow her name to be spoken in his House and it is said that unimaginable punishment should befall anyone who disobeys his order. It is eventually revealed that Zagreus wishes to escape the Underworld to find Persephone, his birth mother whom he never knew, having always been told he was the child of Nyx. Others outside the House of Hades, such as Charon and the Olympians sometimes offer their aid as well. He is aided and encouraged in his journey, primarily by his caretaker Nyx and his mentor Achilles. Sometime before the start of his journey he decides, against his father's will, to escape from the Underworld-no matter how many tries it might take him. He always had a sense that he doesn't belong in the House of Hades. Zagreus is the son of Hades and Persephone, rulers of the Underworld, and is thus the Prince of the Underworld.
